WESTERN ELECTRICMODEL 197D
1940’s - 1950's PAY TELEPHONE with KEYS
This is from a group of payphones that I found back in 2013. In “as-found” condition with the exception of me dusting it off, and adding Western Electric locks on the vault door, and upper housing. Also cleaned the handset. The upper housing lock only requires a flat key (included) to open.
Original coin chute “dings & gongs” as it should when coins are dropped in.
Nice twin-coil relay, and original coin box
This is an excellent earlier example of a VERY heavy 3-slot! I thought that 197's were the first model with a coin bucket, but this one has an earlier, open coin return.
It has an early, cast-steel backboard, and heavy, open-return bottom housing. It weighs 31# without packaging!
