To commemorate the 105th anniversary of our founding, we have planned a commemorative pen featuring the story of the "White Rabbit of Inaba" from Japan's oldest surviving history book, the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters). In this mythological passage, a rabbit on a cape is wounded and weeping, but is saved by Okuninushi, who is passing by. The story's theme of "honesty" and "gentleness" are also important elements of modern society, which embraces diversity.
In Japan, the rabbit is said to be a symbol of protection against bad luck and prosperity of offspring. In China, the rabbit is the god of longevity, and in some European countries, the rabbit is considered a good luck charm to avoid danger. The rabbit has been a lucky animal in many parts of the world since ancient times, and its extraordinary ability to jump has been used to pray for a great leap into the future.
On the cap, a rabbit asking for guidance and Okuninushi (Lord of the Great Land) giving advice to the rabbit are depicted in Taka-Maki-e lacquer. On the shaft, a rabbit hopping in a splendid manner is depicted in Taka-Maki-e lacquer, and its beautiful fur is expressed by the fur engraving technique. The rabbit's feet are decorated with "Wani" (a creature believed to be a shark or crocodile) that appears in the story, as if they were rocks, using Shiai Togidashi Taka-Maki-e to create a three-dimensional effect. This commemorative pen was designed by Masahiro Yamada, a maki-e artist who wishes for a great leap into the future.
