Cafe Paris Absinthe Match Striker Holder- Made of PorcelainThese wonderful match strike (called a
pyrogène
in French) were found throughout late 19th and early 20th century European Cafes . In those days, it was common to see a match striker sitting on a cafe table or bar. Their purpose was to store matches for customers use. The base (the rough surface area) is used to strike and ignite a match. These match strikes were made and generally provided for free by liquor companies and served as advertising. (Much like we today see Coca-cola signs on restaurant tables provided by Coca-cola, match strikes were provided by beverage and liquor companies).
Measures 3.5" tall x 3.5" in diameter.
Match holding compartment is 2.125" deep.
Made of hand painted porcelain.
