Description
5 pounds (2.26kg) Dried Indian Paint Fungus, Echinodontium tinctorium - Native American Red Face PaintThese Indian Paint conks were sustainability harvested in the Rocky Mountains of northwestern Montana. The conks have been dried. The weight is dry weight. These conks can be crushed or ground to make a rust red pigment, that can then be used to make fabric dyes, water colors, oil paints, or traditional Native American face paint.
For dyeing wool and other fabrics, the powder from this conk can be mixed with alum to produce a bright orange/red, pinkish brown when mixed with copper, and grayish purple when mixed with iron.
This mushroom has a deep red/orange flesh. Members of certain Native American tribes applied the ground powder mixed with water to their skin to prevent chapping, and as an anti-inflammatory when consumed in a tea. Its red flesh was also used as a pigment, most particularly for war paint.
Past scientific synonyms of this mushroom include Fomes tinctorius, Hydnum tinctorium, Scindalma tinctorium, Hydnofomes tinctorius.
