    Daytona 200 Mile
    National Championship
at new Record of 94.45 mph
    SUNDAY, MARCH 15—This year’s
12th Annual AMA 200-miler was nothing
less than sensational from all angles.
Paul Goldsmith’s victory on the new
    Harley-Davidson “K” (a KRTT model)
was sensational in that it was the K’s
first appearance in competition at the
famed beach course. It was the first
    American machine victory since 1948
    and Harley-Davidson’s first win since
    1940.
    Goldsmith’s ride was sensational, in
that each of his lap times for his 48
tours around the 4.1 mile course didn’t
    vary over three seconds’ Undoubtedly
the most consistent ride ever put in
here! A real tribute to the rider’s style
as well as his well prepared mount.
The race was also sensational from a
tragic point of view, with Washington’s
Cliff Farwell being fatally injured as
well as the spectator he hit, who was
walking on the paved backstretch. Very
seriously injured in another spill was
    Jimmy Chann, former National Champ.
Another rider as well as two other spec-
tators were injured in these two
    crackups.
The race drew a starting field of 113
starters and at 12:45 the starting bomb
sent the riders on their way. Goldsmith,
starting in the second row, was the first
man through the north turn, but by
the time the two mile paved back-
stretch was covered, Long Beach Cali-
fornia’s John “Samps” Hicks was in
the lead on an A. J. Lewis tuned
Triumph. Hicks’ sizzling pace had the
crowds cheering, and was very reme-
niscent of the late Ernie Roccio’s early
lead in last year’s race, also on a Lewis
