Cactus Hare & Hound
LONG BEACH’S Del Kuhn was the
first man home in Southern Cali-
fornia’s recent “Cactus Hare and
Hound.”
The 100-mile run, sponsored by the
active Riverside Bombers m/c, drew a
starting field of 97 riders and machines.
Those riders entered, who had com-
peted in the recent Big Bear Run, not-
iced a similarity in terrain, as the Cac-
tus Hare and Hound started on the
desert near Banning (on the road to
Palm Springs) and the finish was in
the snow covered San Jacinto Moun-
tains.
Assisting Kuhn in setting the pace
for the field was Bart Leeman (AJS)
and Bud Ekins (Matchless). Once into
the snow, Ekins was Kuhn’s hottest
rival.
The usual terrain, obstacles and me-
chanical failures eliminated all but 37
of the starting field, by the time the
finish was reached.
Following Harley-Davidson K mounted
Kuhn across the finish line was Bart
Leeman (AJS), Russ Good (H-D K),
Al Rogers (AJS) and Jim Parker
(H-D K).
Del’s victory on the “K,” as well as
third place man Good’s win on the same
brand, is somewhat impressive to all
followers of the sport who know these
names, as their former victories and
finishes have been on English machines.
